Sustainability

KKP has integrated the principles of circular economy in the truest sense, creating a sustainable supply chain, working only on natural fibers which are biodegradable.

“Looking at the systemic challenges the world is facing, it is clear that we need to focus on biodegradable materials”, suggests Mr. N. Sathesh Kumar, MD of the company. “The other two factors that become extremely important are the use, or rather reduced use of chemicals, water and energy”.

KKP Sustainability Journey

Sustainability is part of our core vision. We share a deep concern for the generations which are to succeed us. This gives us the conviction to go beyond our ways to ensure that our business practices are 100% non- destructive, and regenerative to the extent possible. At KKP, Sustainability always takes precedence. So, how do we do it? We take a very methodical approach. Broadly speaking, we focus on 5 KEY AREAS OF IMPACT:

Energy Management:

Textile industry is an energy-intensive industry. Therefore, there is tremendous potential in terms of creating valuable Sustainability impacts. KKP is an Energy Conscious Enterprise. We took a two-pronged approach – first, we optimized our utilization to ensure highest energy efficiency through lowest possible consumption. And then, we went full force to achieve 100% renewable energy sourcing! As of today, we completely rely on insourcing of Solar and Wind power of which close to 48 MWs are from our own inhouse plant! This is how we are moving towards aligning with the Paris Climate Treaty and taking direct action on SDG 13, Climate Action.

Green Sourcing:

It is the philosophy to ensure that the life cycle of a textile-based product ends in an Earth-friendly manner. Ensuring a harmonious end is all about controlling what goes into the start of the life cycle! KKP is highly engaged in replacing industry conventional materials with nature friendly, biodegradables like organic cotton and sustainable Lenzing Tencel, Refibra, Eco Vera and Preferred MMCs (pMMC) - an important raw material in our manufacturing process. These are sourced from non-endangered, certified forests which are manufactured sustainably. These pMMC come out of a closed-loop production process which ensures the reuse of water for conservation purpose, and even the reuse of chemicals which helps eliminate discharge and pollution.

Such sustainable products are themselves sourced from non-endangered, certified forests, and are manufactured sustainably to meet OEKO TEX and REACH standards. Currently, we realise about 20% of our turnover from these materials which is set to reach 32% by the end of this financial year itself. This is an area we will continue to tap in to maximize the use of these sustainable materials. By using sustainable raw materials, the end of the life is Biodegradable/Recyclable.

Packaging and Logistics - image

Packaging and Logistics:

It is another area where we are making a meaningful impact. A large proportion of our package’s materials are biodegradable such as self-fabrics and recycled carton boxes. Through smart management of material movements, and adopting latest technology solutions, including EVs, we are significantly minimizing carbon footprints in our logistic processes.

Resource Management - image

Resource Management:

Resource management is about optimizing resources' usage, minimizing wastage, and ensuring proper management of such wastage. KKP works at the forefront of achieving these objectives.

Waste management is one of the important areas to further Sustainability. We ensure all pre-consumer textile waste from the manufacturing process is thoroughly sorted and grouped, and converted to fabrics for other uses like pocketing clothes for trousers. As simple as it may sound, it goes a long way in contributing to an impactful solution.

We invest heavily in Innovation and Technology to ensure the most efficient use of resources such as water, chemicals and energy such that wastage is minimal. We have practices that enable zero liquid discharge, and non-toxic chemical usage. We use state-of-the-art recycling and reuse technology that conserves tremendous amount of water, and greatly minimizes the amount of chemicals used in processing.

Health and Safety - image

Health and Safety:

Health and safety of our employees is paramount, and we leave no stone unturned in ensuring this by creating a safe working environment. Following are few of the key highlights from several more employee safety and welfare programs that are continuously running at KKP:

  • Periodic safety training, safety inspections, and the provision of proper personal protective equipment (PPEs) are part of the employee safety measures undertaken.
  • Employees are covered under the personal accident insurance and workman compensation policy.
  • Health check-up is carried out twice a year for all employees and medical support is provided if deemed necessary.
  • First aid training and fire evacuation drills are periodically conducted.
  • Up-to-date Covid vaccination for all employees carried out.

How we validate our Green Practices and Social Practices

Higg Index and Green Co Score:

We take pride in taking accountability to our actions and responsibilities. Demonstrating this commitment is the fact that we benchmark ourselves to global standards of Sustainability, and undergo voluntary self-assessments. We get ourselves assessed against the HIGG index, and rated for Green Co score. While these measures give us a sense of satisfaction for the amount of positive impacts we have made, they also help us uncover greater opportunities to do more.

KKPFL is accredited with SILVER (82%) certification in the recently conducted “GO-GREEN” Audit and in addition KKPFL has excelled in the HIGG Index Sustainable audit which ensures our commitment in practicing the best environmental standards.

SMETA and GOTS:

This is KKP's core ethos which drives its commitment to its social responsibilities. We are proud to be certified by SMETA, GOTS (IOAS) and few others for practicing best socially compliant activities. At the same time, we are also recognized for our contributions to forming a Circular Economy by creating a sustainable supply chain, and such other measures as adopting only biodegradable natural fibers.
